Phew! Its been long enough since we’ve been hearing about the Atom-powered, Windows 7 boasting tablet from HP, which even though has shifted its focus from consumers to enterprise and business markets, has priced it at $799 and will be available via HP’s website for anyone who wants to get their hands on it. We’re just glad it’s official!

Hewlett-Packard Co has unveiled its first product for the rapidly advancing tablet market. It looks like the HP Slate 500 is an attempt to replicate the PC experience in a tablet form, hence clashing with its rivals whose devices give more of a smartphone feel. The Slate boasts the same Windows 7 that many use on their standard PC’s. Apart from that, the tablet has a hefty price tag as compared to the Apple iPad, which kick-started the tablet revolution when it was introduced.

The director of business notebook marketing at HP, Carol Hess-Nickels stresses upon the business compatibility of the Slate. Healthcare, Retail and Insurance companies, along with others can build custom applications taking advantage of the device’s portability.

She said:

It’s really like a full-function PC, it runs Windows, it will run your office applications, it just so happens to be in a slate form factor

Certain specifications of the Slate are:

  • 1.86GHZ Intel Atom Z540 processor
  • 2GB Ram
  • 64Gb SSD
  • Broadcom’s Crystal HD Accelerator for handling 1080p video
  • HDMI-out port
  • Wacom Active Digitizer for taking notes
  • Front Facing VGA camera
  • 3 Megapixel back camera
  • 8.9-inch capacitive touch screen
  • Windows 7 Professional

To say that the HP Slate 500 could break the phenomenal consumer market that the Apple iPad dominates, will be a long shot. Though the Slate just might become dear to the business and corporate markets, due to its compatibility, portability and form factor.
