With the announcement of Chrome OS along with intergration with Gmail and Google Docs,Google has launched the first app for its Google Cloud Print service for iOS and Android. The service allows users to print documents and emails directly from Gmail’s mobile interface.

Unlike Apple’s competing AirPrint protocol, which requires the printer and computer to be on the same network as well as a compatible printer, Google Cloud Print allows documents to be printed on any printer over any network.

There is a catch to the functionality though, in order to configure printers for use with the Google Cloud Print service, must be connected to a PC running Windows 7,Vista, or XP and the latest version of Google Chrome. Google said they are releasing a Mac and Linux version “coming soon”

Apple is working on its own printing service though, AirPrint for iOS devices. AirPrint can offer support across a wide array of applications, it does require that the iOS device and the printer be on the same wireless network. Google Cloud Print can enable printing to anywhere.
