Sony, one of the leader in the gaming industry with its strong machine the Play Station, announced firmware update to the PS3 machine with major updates, bringing in exciting new features. The PlayStation Blog released details on the Firmware version 3.21. One thing to note, Sony has disabled the 'Other OS' feature, which let the users to install an alternative operating system on their PlayStation consoles. Security reasons was the reason stated the company to pull down this feature.

Even though the feature of 'Other OS' have been brought down, the company will continue providing access to the range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners.

The latest update will be available on April 1st and users are being advised to back up any data installed on their alternative Operating systems as after April 1st, users would no longer be able to access it.

Apart from that, if users wish to keep a hold on their existing OS, they can simply choose not to upgrade their Play Station consoles but it is strongly advised by the company to make a firmware update. The following features are being tagged as non-functioning once the update is launched:

  • Access to sign in to PlayStation Network to access the online features of PS3 games and chat
  • Playback of PS3 software title or Blu-ray Disc videos
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that a stored on the media server
